This book cover was for a University Assignment all about NZ's involvement in WW1.

New Zealand’s involvement in the air wars in World War One was the theme that I chose to focus my research and final artwork on.The fantail in my painting, donning a pilot’s hat and goggles is used to represent the New Zealand pilot Captain Keith Logan Caldwell who was one of the most noted NZ WW1 pilots. He was known for his great flying ability much like a fantail and its ability to dart quickly through the air. The medals worn on the fantail in my painting are the Belgian War Cross (Croix de Guerre), the Military cross and Distinguished Flying Cross that were awarded to Caldwell for his contribution to the air wars. The fantail pilot is not just representative of Caldwell but also of all the New Zealand pilots and the service they provided to their country in the war by putting New Zealand on the map and helping to buildNew Zealand’s identity in the skies of Europe.
